Practical AI for Small Businesses: Where to Start

Many small businesses feel they should be "doing something with AI" but aren't sure where to begin. Starting with the technology usually leads to a handful of disconnected experiments. Starting with the work (the enquiries, quotations, reports and emails that take up the most time) gives AI a clear job to do.

A good first candidate is a process that is frequent, follows a recognisable pattern and currently depends on someone copying information from one place to another. Customer enquiries and quotation requests are common examples: AI can help extract the key details, draft a response and route the request, while a member of the team reviews the output before anything is sent.

That review step matters. AI is most valuable when it supports people rather than replacing their judgement, and when the team understands what it can and cannot do reliably. That is why practical training in prompting, checking outputs and knowing where AI fits is often as important as the automation itself.
